Support for parents & carers
Parenting teenagers can be really challenging. Adolescence is a period of massive change and many young people struggle to deal with the pressures. We understand that, as a parent, it can be hard to know how to help them safely navigate this time.
Who is the service for?
Our Parenting Teenagers Project (PTP) can help those having difficulties parenting teenagers or young adults aged 12 -18 yrs (i.e. up to 18th birthday).
You can talk in confidence with a trained professional, experienced in working with parents and young people. You will have space to think, talk and be heard. No judgement, just working together to help you find ways to support your child and reduce family stresses.
We can see one, or both, parents, as well as step-parents, foster carers, adoptive parents or family members such as aunts, uncles or grandparents. We work with parents and carers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and can provide interpreters when necessary. The service is currently open to parents living in Haringey or with a Haringey GP. We can see out of borough parents if your child lives in Haringey or has a Haringey GP.
How do you get an appointment?
Just call 020 8348 5947 or email us with your phone number at appointments@opendooronline.org, and we will get back to you. We will take some details about your situation and availability and your name will go on our waiting list.
How long will you have to wait?
Within four to six weeks you’ll be invited to an initial telephone assessment with a therapist to understand more about your situation and how we can help. There will be a wait before regular appointments can begin, but we’re available by phone if you need to discuss anything more urgently.
What happens in the sessions?
You’ll meet with a highly trained, experienced therapist who will help you manage the stress of parenting a troubled or troubling teenager. You’ll work with the therapist to develop understanding and strategies to encourage your teenager’s healthy development, improve communication and strengthen parental resilience.
We offer six weekly sessions of 50 minutes each, with further help if you need it.
Where and when will you be seen?
We have fully accessible and comfortable therapy spaces in Crouch End and Tottenham. Or you can have sessions by video or phone if you prefer – daytimes or early evenings (Monday to Friday – 9am-7pm).
How will it help?
The many parents we have helped over the last 20 plus years tell us that they feel much better equipped to deal with the challenges of parenting teenagers.
